Journeymen Refresher Courses

Next INSTALL certification test will take place in January.

Resilient and carpet certifications will be assessed. Call the INSTALL Local 1823 office (215-569-3044) to reserve your testing station, as space is limited. All journeymen and mechanics are welcome to test for their INSTALL certification. Be sure to wear proper clothing and bring your own tools, both of which are required to take the assessment test. Testing begins sharply at 7:30 a.m.

Apprenticeship Training
INSTALL Local #1823 includes apprenticeship and career long training recognized by the flooring industry as the best available. This training is regularly updated to maintain the highest possible training standards.

Floorlayers install many different types of flooring materials such as carpet, tile, and vinyl sheet flooring. The flooring is applied to hardwood, concrete sub-floors, walls and stairs. Most flooring installations are indoors in new construction or in existing buildings, from single-family homes to high-rise skyscrapers. On occasion, they will work outdoors to install special materials such as Stadium Astro-Turf®. Floorlayers work from prints to create beautiful and sometimes intricate patterns that are both durable and pleasing to the eye.

There are 800 hours of classroom and shop instruction during the four-year instruction during the four-year term of Apprenticeship.

Hand Tools Strip and Pad
Floor Covering Removal Installation of Underlayment
Adhesive applications and Techniques Layout
Fitting and Installing Carpet including Direct Glue Down Portable Power Tools and Equipment Safety
Double Stick Enhanced Back
Fitting and Installing Tile including:
Square Layout Diagonal Layout
Features, Borders and Inserts  
Fitting and Installing Sheet Goods including:
Floor Lay Flash Cove
Seam Cutting and Welding Hand Fitting
Direct Scribing Pattern Scribing
Fitting and Installing Hardwood including:
Block Plank
Direct Glue Down Nailing
Clipping    

Classroom Instruction includes: Union History, Safety, Methods and Materials, Field Related Mathematics, Blueprint Reading, Material Take-Off, Estimating, Theory, and Computer Training. 

Additional Training includes: Standard First Aid and CPR Certification, Power-Actuated Tool Certification, OSHA 10 and Process Safety Management Certification, and Manufacturers Seminars with the opportunity for Certification.

Third and Fourth Year Apprentices are also eligible to take some Journeyperson Courses.

INSTALL Local #1823 conducts many courses each year to update and improve mechanics and journeymen floorlayers. These courses provide manufacturer certifications, the newest techniques, and refresher seminars for career long training.
