The Carpenters Apprenticeship Training Facility now includes another 66,000 square feet of instructional area,
making its total structural footprint 125,000 square feet. Expanded areas for carpet and resilient mockups and
classrooms for theory instruction will enable the center to host more apprenticeship and journeyman skill upgrade
training courses. The new 200-seat auditorium, wired for teleconferencing, and a new computer lab, also are now
available for use.
The center celebrated its expansion with a grand opening event October 21, 2005, which was attended by several
local dignitaries, state legislators, and Bill Irwin, executive director of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters
International Training Center in Las Vegas.
We can easily and confidently say that the men and women of INSTALL Local 1823 will now learn, or hone,
their craft in one of the best training centers in North America, said John McGrath, President of Local 1823
and the coordinator of Philadelphias INSTALL program.

INSTALL Certification December 4, 2004
INSTALL is a marketing tool used to win work. INSTALL stands for the International
Standards and Training Alliance. It is cooperation between manufacturers of flooring,
contractors and the UBC. INSTALL uses endorsements by flooring contractors, and UBC.
INSTALL uses endorsements of our excellent training by flooring manufacturers to
market our contractors and members as the most talented trades people in the flooring
business.
INSTALL Local 1823 has used the INSTALL marketing tool to organize many contractors
and win much work. IT'S GOOD FOR BUSINESS.
We have recognized its value and have become leaders in this campaign. Council Representative
John McGrath is chairman of the INSTALL marketing Committee and a member of INSTALL
Labor/Management Committee, which created the INSTALL program. Jim Valente and Steve
Raisner were prominent members of the team that created the INSTALL curriculum, which
is now uniform across our Brotherhood.
INSTALL'S ultimate purpose is to win more work, to make this goal a reality, it must
involve our membership, both journeymen and apprentices. The International and the
Labor/Management Committee envision an INSTALL Certification can be used a diploma
to show that a member has attained expert status. Homeowners, Contractors, architects,
designers and customers can see an industry endorsed credential that our members
have unparalleled training, The Best In The Business.
The International needed a council to run the initial certification. On itĒs maiden
voyage there were bound to be challenges, so the host had to be committed to the
program and capable to overcome the challenges. Because of our involvement in the
INSTALL program and our contribution to the training curriculum, the International
chose our Council and INSTALL Local 1823.
From Wednesday, December 1st to Saturday, December 4th apprentices and journeymen
participated in the certification. We are especially proud of the 45 journeymen
from INSTALL Local 1823 that volunteered on Saturday, December 4th.
They showed pride and dedication. The members of the InternationalĒs training committee
were present, headed by International Training Director Bill Irwin, were hugely impressed
by our members and our training program. Director Joe Durkin and his staff really
showed our excellence that week.
From this effort, the grading standards for the INSTALL certification will be set.
The INSTALL certification will be available to our membership to be used to show
our excellence and to win more work. |
