Several local buildings agree to specify use of INSTALL floorlayers

10/22/2007

Several local facility managers and building owners are taking advantage of a specification that virtually assures them of a professional flooring installation that’s done on time and on budget.

Patrick McGinley, coordinator of the local INSTALL program, reports that these building operations officials are inserting language into their specifications mandating that only INSTALL-trained floor installation professionals can work on their project.

To date, more than 300 floors, totaling 6.9 million square feet of job site space, will have flooring installed strictly by INSTALL manpower. Those buildings are:

- Philadelphia stock exchange - 1818 Market Street - ASI properties (seven buildings) - SSH properties (five buildings)

“These building officials clearly understand that it does matter who installs the flooring, and they also understand that they can specify the level of professional to do the job,” McGinley says. “We give them information on the return on their investment, and we also supply third-party testimonials, so that both objective and subjective information is there for easy review.”

McGinley said that local INSTALL professionals are certified, meaning they are tested to prove their competence. The specification language focuses on the proprietary nature of that certification. The specification language being adopted by these buildings reads:

INSTALL certification is a requirement for journeymen floor coverers. Or, membership in a state certified apprenticeship program is a requirement for floor coverers who have not yet become journeymen, to be eligible to install flooring on the job site.

“We expect to continue adding to our list of buildings that specify the exclusive use of our flooring professionals,” McGinley said. “And that means less re-dos, less call-backs and more satisfied customers for these building officials.”

This eastern PA, Delaware and eastern Maryland INSTALL program is the local affiliate of the international INSTALL program, and is the facility management industry’s best local flooring resource.

50 major mills and manufacturers endorse the INSTALL program. These partners help steer the INSTALL curriculum so that what’s taught to INSTALL professionals reflects directly to what is needed on the job site.

That’s important to facility managers and other specifiers, because when a flooring product is specified, the maker of that product has most likely played a role in formatting the INSTALL training program. Facility managers and other specifiers can “close the loop” by specifying that a contractor who uses only INSTALL professionals should install the product, to better ensure a proper installation.
